The Granny Agnes Browne Series Brendan O'Carroll Books Reviews

  • THE GRANNY marks the end of Brendan O'Carroll's trilogy that started with the stellar lead novel, THE MAMMY, and bridged with the fair to in-the-middling THE CHISELLERS. I heartily recommend the lead-off book of this slice-of-Irish life series because stand-up comic O'Carroll pulls out all the stops (OK, most of them) and the humor is, at times, stop and laugh-out-loud funny -- a rarity, as any humor-loving reader can tell you.

This book, along with the middle one, has a few funny moments, too, but they're not quite as often or as strong as with the first. Instead, O'Carroll gets caught up in an Irish soap opera of sorts as he covers the fortunes and misfortunes of "All Agnes' Children." Alas, there are many (children, I mean) and O'Carroll is forced to cover a lot of ground in a few pages, making things a bit thin at times.

Still, the plot is good fun and the character of Agnes Browne is irresistibly irreverent. If you don't have time for the trilogy but have an interest in earthy, Irish humor, treat yourself at the very least to THE MAMMY.
  • My mother loved reading Angela's Ashes so I was looking for a similar book for her. This was recommended. I took a chance and bought all three books by Brendan O'Carroll ( The Chisellers, The Granny and The Mammy ). You know it's a good book when you hear your 84 year old mother laughing out loud while reading it. She breezed through all three books non stop.
  • All his books are marvelous. They put you right into the environment. A thoroughly enjoyable and gritty slice of life.
  • An amazing book by one of the most important entertainers of the 21st century. If you do not know Brendan O'Carroll or 'Mrs. Brown's Boys' please look them up.
  • The Granny gains momentum as the family blossoms and goes in different directions.

Agnes Browne, once The Mammy, now finds herself called The Granny!

She takes on the role with her usual good-humor and somewhat naive persona...always full of spunk and quick Irish humor, she is a force to be reckoned with as her children and grandchildren carve out their own lives.

I was a little saddened to turn the last page on this heart-felt and humorous Browne family trilogy....I will miss them!
    Highly recommended!
  • Famines are complete with several generations. A picture of the life and times and the sorrows and happiness in life.
  • I put off reading this for quite a while. Only because I didn't feel ready to say goodbye. The final book in the Agnes Browne series, The Granny finds Agnes in middle age, her children grown and flown the nest. It is both lighthearted and bitter sweet as are the previous books. Sprinkled generously with humor through out. All good things must come to an end but I miss you already Agnes Browne.
  • Outstanding trilogy of books about Agnes Browne and her 7 kids in working class of Dublin as the kids grow from children to young adults. Each child grows its own bent and direction in life as Agnes loves them thru thick and thin while continuing her own path as well. I read them all in just a few days and didn't want to have to say farewell. Really really loved the series!
