A Pride and Prejudice variation, set primarily in Derbyshire, this Regency Era romance explores how the destiny of Jane Austen’s characters will be fulfilled even when all of the odds are stacked against them. After a mysterious accident leads to their father’s death, the future for the Bennet girls seems bleak. Elizabeth Bennet finds work in Ramsgate, and one blustery morning, chance brings her together with Georgiana Darcy, a young, wealthy, orphaned girl. When Elizabeth saves her new friend from ruin, she sets off a course of events that alters not only her own life, but the lives of those she cherishes. Fitzwilliam Darcy was looking for a wife, not love. He had everything he needed to be happy. A wife would provide him with a heir, and if he was lucky, she would not interfere too greatly in his life. Then, fate put Elizabeth Bennet in his path — destroying his tranquility. Now, in addition to trying to find a bride, he must deal with a stubborn, impertinent, troublemaker who doesn’t seem to understand her place. Will Elizabeth destroy his chance at happiness, or will she be making of it?

"I love the Pride and Prejudice variations, and I have enjoyed all of Ms. Worth's books so far. However, this is my favorite of all she's written. Yes, Darcy is a little more grumpy and a little more quick-tempered, but I love the twists throughout this one. Very different plot with some nice surprises as well. I look forward to Ms. Worth's new books."

  • I have read a zillion P & P variations and I am stunned that I appear to be the only one complaining that there is a GIGANTIC unresolved story line revolving around everyone's favorite nemesis, George Wickham, and none other than "John" Bennet (Elizabeth's father's name in this story.) Wickham is his usual depraved self, and there are scenes involving another crook -Wickham's acquaintance, who happens to be a dead ringer for Mr. Bennet, and there is mention of a way for Wickham to cash in. Did I miss something?? Didn't anyone else notice the several foreshadowing mentions of this other lookalike character, who never appeared again? Instead of following up and using this specific it seems that Ms. Worth decided to change Wickham's character into a good guy, and changed ODC's characters to the point that they were unrecognizable and actually not very likable!! Elizabeth constantly angry and snide? Fitzwilliam rude? No! No, no. Please don't change the characters of our beloved protagonists!
The title of this book is very misleading; there are some Betrothals, but the author completely missed her chance to include the major Betrayal by Wickham to which she seemed to be heading. I am just confused at the final major (and very illogical and unlikely at that!) GOOD deed by Wickham.
  • In this P&P variation ODC don't meet right away, only after Elizabeth meets Georgiana in Ramsgate, saves her from Wickham through some timely intervention, gets offered and declines a position as Georgiana 's companion (offered by Col. Fitzwilliam), works as a companion to an elderly lady until the lady dies, then finally accepts the position of companion to Georgiana. After all that Elizabeth finally meets Darcy at Pemberly, but even that is only after she's been there for a few months. They get off to a rocky start due to some unbelievably poor decisions on Elizabeth 's part, namely her decision to rearrange the books in his library without permission, and then to show an appalling lack of remorse when confronted about it.

I read the afterword written by the author in which she admits Elizabeth is perhaps a little too forward here for our comfort with her character, but Ms. Worth doesn't apologize for it since it's a plot point to be discovered later. Still, I can't say that I admired Elizabeth much at that point in the story, but rather felt Darcy should have fired her on the spot. Of course that's not possible, so thankfully we get past it and move on to the evolution of the feelings they have for each other. That development is quite slow but romantic. Darcy is less stiff and forbidding at Pemberly, and Elizabeth's opinion hasn,'t been poisoned by Wickham in this version, so she's more receptive to his charms.

The events surrounding Mr. Bennett 's death and disappearance are kind of strange and far fetched. For this reasi
  • This story was a true joy to read. Starting with characters whose nature and attributes you already know, only enhanced the reader's ability to relate immediately to their interactions. The story itself though was so original it was a breath of fresh air. The writing was witty and expressive and the ending was what Regency Era romance is meant to be. I loved every minute of this book.

  • You have to love Elizabeth Bennett. The author portrayed her charm and intelligence all through the book. Mr. Darcy started out grumpy and out of sorts but eventually got it together.
  • Another interesting variation of author Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice. Events occur very different from usual canon but I liked it
  • I was curious about this book when I received a notification regarding reading an ARC of this book for an honest review. I am like most romance readers, and I adore Jane Austen. I've read everything the woman ever wrote. I have read other author's post-wedding books, along with other books from the perspective of different characters. I'd like to say I enjoyed those other non-Jane Austen books, but there were many that weren't great. I often think we should stop messing with perfection and leave Ms. Austen's books alone.

Then, I read this one. Firstly, while it doesn't entirely entone Jane Austen, it comes close. There are glimpses of her style in this book. However, it isn't as description heavy as her work. Secondly, we meet all of the characters again from Pride & Prejudice. Reading them again feels like putting on a warm blanket on a cold day. However, Cinnamon Worth creates a different story for them. Each character holds on to the essence of their character from P & P. For example, Mr. Wickham is still an abhorrent individual. However, he undertakes different actions to show it. If you are worried if the H and h of this story change their outcome from the original, you need not worry. They simply have a different story from the original. We are given more of his backstory, and they meet each other in a different manner. However, they both struggle with their pride and false assumptions much like the original.

If you love P & P, you will like this book. It will make you pause and question why Worth felt it necessary to recreate the story. I would imagine it has more to do with her own love for this story and creating something new in homage to Jane Austen. However, overall, I enjoyed this read, as I am sure you will too.
