Frederick D. Reese was born on November 28, 1929, in Selma, Alabama. Reese rose to national prominence as a civil rights leader after Selma’s “Bloody Sunday.†He later marched with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. from Selma to Montgomery as an advocate for African-American voter registration rights. On March 7, 1965, Reese and more than 600 other activists marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The day would live in infamy as “Bloody Sunday†after protestors were beaten and sprayed with tear gas on the orders of Alabama Governor George Wallace. Following the violence that day, the majority of the marchers congregated at Brown Chapel AME Church, where Reese spoke to the crowd. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. called Reese from Atlanta with news that he was organizing a march involving ministers from all over the country. On March 21, 1965, more than 3,000 people gathered at Selma’s Brown Chapel AME Church in an attempt to march the 50-mile journey from Selma to Montgomery, but Judge Johnson would only grant clearance for 300 marchers to begin the two-lane trek along Hwy. 80 east, leaving Selma. Once the highway expanded from a two-lane to a four-lane road, people began joining the marchers. By the time they reached Alabama’s state capital, Montgomery, the number of marchers had reached 50,000. Reese marched hand in hand with King, and his front row presence made him a symbol of and leader in the civil rights movement. Read how it all began…

Selma SelfSacrifice Dr Frederick D Reese Kathy M Walters 9780578460444 Books Reviews
- I am a middle school social studies teacher and have read many books and completed much research on the Civil Rights Movement. Selma’s Self-Sacrifice has become my most-favorite and go-to civil rights book. I believe you could teach most of the movement by using this invaluable document.
Selma’s Self-Sacrifice does not focus solely on the events in Selma, AL. Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Reese gives a very real testimony of how history, culture, and society affected this movement. He remains very humble about his own role in impacting American history although it becomes very clear to the reader what a tremendous impact he had on so many including each of us (you’ll realize this as you read.) You will see the everlasting impact of his legacy through this story.
This book is written in narrative form by Rev. Frederick D. Reese as told to Kathy Walters. I love the VOICE in this book- Frederick D. Reese’s voice. Ms. Walters shows exceptional talent in the way she writes this book. She accomplished the unimaginable. She preserved the essence of Rev. Frederick D. Reese by allowing the reader to hear this whole story in his voice- from his perspective. This is one of the greatest accomplishments because this amazing man is no longer walking this earth with us. Ms. Walters completely preserved the treasure of this icon’s testimony as a primary source for generations. It is a timeless and invaluable gift.
This book made me feel as if I were sitting down having an intimate conversation with Rev. Reese. He provides a very candid history of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama through a new perspective. This book is a must read for everyone- even teenagers! Rev. Reese will walk you through the told and previously untold events of the struggle for voting rights and other civil rights in Alabama.
Rev. Reese begins telling you his story by explaining who he was and where he came from. He acknowledges his inner strength and strong conviction while exposing the struggles he faced during his teen years. He acknowledges the people who inspired and challenged him to become the best person he could be. I loved the glimpses into his development and his honesty as he shares very personal stories and reflections of times of triumph and tragedy. He always recognizes the importance of his faith in God, family, his teachers, and himself. He challenges you to reflect upon your own decisions and examine your own conscience. He will motivate and inspire you to recognize the strength of each of us as individuals to STAND for the truth and what is right even in the face of adversity. He will tell you an untold story from the inner workings of the civil rights movement. You will see history from a new perspective and with greater understanding. You will be inspired to fight for what is right and he will explain how to do this successfully. This book is a must read. I will be rereading it many times. Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Reese and Ms. Kathy Walters have just given us one of the most inspirational books of all time. - I love this book.....I love how the story hits key points of Dr. Reese life. This is a must Read!!!!!!
