In ancient days, sorcerers sought to learn the One True Spell that would give them power over all the world and understanding of all magic. . . .

The One True Spell was a woman, and her name was Mystra -- and her kisses were wonderful.

Priest Havilon Tharnstar

Tales Told to a Blind Wizard

It is the time before Myth Drannor, when the Heartlands are home to barbarians, and wicked dragons rule the skies. In these ancient days, Elminster is but a shepherd boy, dreaming of adventure and heroics. When a dragon-riding magelord sweeps down upon him, though, the boy is thrust into a world of harsh realities, corrupt rulers, and evil sorcerers.

With patience and grit, Elminster sets about to change all that. The result of his labors is a world reborn and a mage made.

"For those who are no strangers to the world of D&D, Elmisnter needs no introductions; a notorious mage of immense powers. Still, if you have not been following the history and the evolution of the world of Faerun through the early D&D editions, you might have obscured events and a lack of information on how someone can become as powerful as this world-known mage.

In this book, the author will introduce his character, Elminster; a boy, who due to dramatic events, will experience a lot of mishaps. How will he manage to save his life, survive, and become strong enough to avenge those who wronged him? How will he become a mage and how did he learn his spells and got his powers? Those questions are answered in this 1st book of the series.

The writing of the author is good, but not something overwhelmingly special. I guess that goes to the fact that it's one of his early works, and he has evolved much since the days he put down the words of this novel. The story development is also not immaculate, but not bad to kick you off the story, though, in some cases, deus ex machina is overused and somewhat feels too strong and seems (to me) to unbalance the storyline; yet I'll give that -again- to the fact that this is an early work.

Yet, in the end, I was left with a pleasant feeling of following the adventures of the hero, while at the same time enriching my knowledge about the realms of Faerun and their lore. I'm intrigued to follow the hero's adventures in other books and find out more about him."

Elminster The Making of a Mage Forgotten Realms Ed Greenwood 9780786902033 Books Reviews

  • I was introduced to the Forgotten Realms books via R.A. Salvatore's work. I quickly developed an addiction to Faerun and all its wonders, burned through every book Salvatore has ever written, and began searching for other authors whose imaginations are rooted within the Forgotten Realms.

It amazes me that every author who contributes to the wonders and legends of Faerun is incredibly talented, skilled, highly intelligent, insightful, courageous, charismatic, exceptionally dedicated..... obviously, this is a list that could go on for quite some time! After decades of searching for, and rarely finding, well-written, truly original fantasy sagas, I feel like I've won the lottery!!

I recommend the Forgotten Realms books very highly. Pick an author, any one will do, and start reading. I guarantee you will discover a world you'll never want to leave.

Ed Greenwood is one of the founders of this magical group of the most talented fantasy authors in the world, and his Elminster is a character so vibrant you will find mention of him in every Forgotten Realms author's saga. Elminster is vital to all magic in every part of Faerun, just as Greenwood himself is vital to the authors who breathe life into those lands.

This book reveals Elminster's humble and tragic beginnings and opens wide the shroud of secrecy which has always enveloped him. If you, like me, have always wondered just who the mysterious Elminster is and how he came to be so revered throughout Faerun, I advise you to read this book. You won't be disappointed as you travel with Elminster, discovering how and why he came to be who he is.

Making of a Mage is filled with excitement, danger, sorrow, joy, adventure, and even love. It's so well-written you will forget you're reading as you lose yourself in a world you come to adore.
  • This is admittedly the first of Greenwood's works that I have read, and it's actually also my first introduction to the D&D books as a whole, but man was it a good start.

Greenwood's worldbuilding is top notch. And as a more "heavy" reader (mostly reading non-fiction), it's very nice to see legitimate philosophical discussions occurring in the world. Elminster's relationship with magic as a whole is a very good example of that, and Greenwood introduces it very well.

The plot as a whole though seems very "convenient", but I suppose that's the nature of D&D, the main character is always a "chosen one" so to speak. The sequence of events in this book is a bit too convenient, but El's gotta work for them too.

  • Elminster - the mage of mages, the beloved of Mystra, the savior of the weak and exploiter of the damsels. If you are a Forgotten Realms reader or roleplayer you have heard this name and likely marveled at his abilities as the protector of Shadowdale, keeper of the lore and defender of Mystra's might.

Yet, at the beginning, he was a simple thief. That's right - Elminster, Archmage of the Realms, started his life as a simple street urchin stealing from others. How did he become the mage he is later in life? How is it that he has lived as long as he has? Why is it that everytime there is a crisis, his name is somehow involved in setting things right? Is he a mere mortal or something more? Was his fate written or did he create it with the help of a god?

Elminster The Making of a Mage covers his early life - when he was still a nobody living on the street. For a true fan of Forgotten Realms, created by Ed Greenwood, the author of this book, I was in awe while reading the backstory of one of the most famous and recognizable characters in all the Realm. I may be a bit biased, as I grew up reading these books and roleplaying in the Realms with friends - but to finally read the story of how it all started - it simply does not compare.

Are there better written books out there? Probably. Are there better fantasy books? Likely. Is this a book for a true fan of Forgotten Realms lore, who puts knowledge of this fantasy world at the top of the things they like to do in their spare time? Yep, I'd say so. Is FR my favorite world - well, as time has progressed no, but as I write this review, I recall how excited I was to read a book about the mage of mages - the protector of the gods and keeper of Mystra's flame. I would relate this book to reading the childhood story of your favorite role model, hero, celebrity - except my "hero" was a fictional character, in a fantasy world, who kept my imagination soaring to new heights. Allow the mind to dream and you'll be surprised what new and wonderful things it will come up with.
