Spies Like Me The Gems Spy Series Volume 1 Doug Solter Travis Miles Books Reviews

  • This story features a group of girls, code name “The Gems”. They totally remind me of this show I used to watch “Totally spies”. Doug wrote that he wanted to write the type of story that hasn't really been a focus of young adult, and one of the reasons that I loved totally spies was because it focused on sisterhood and on girls empowering themselves. Doug has a history of writing empowering books and this does not disappoint. This would most definitely be empowering to young girls out there.

The focal point of this story is Emma [code name Black Opal]. She is reeling from the loss of her father, and what she thinks was his murder, and then she gets a chance to do something about it. “Black Opal, meet Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby”. Emma has to find a way to navigate this new relationship and at the same time stop an evil super villain group form destroying the world. High school has never been so interesting, especially when you’re not there as often as you ought to be, and when you’re halfway across the globe. Oh, and throw in a dreamy boy.

I’ll give this story a four out of five stars, and would recommend this for young girls, although everyone will have something to learn from it.

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
  • Not my usual read. It is a good one for young adults. It was interesting and fun. Good to go outside my usual and read a good one. I would call it an attention getting book. It keeps your attention also. I recommend it. Especially for young adults. "I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book."
  • I received an ARC of Spies like Me by Doug Solter for my honest review. This book reminded me of a teenage version of "Charlie's Angels." Four girls with special talents are brought together to help save the world one mission at a time. While your typical teenage girls are worrying about clothes, school ,boys, and popularity....these girls are kicking butt and taking names. An awesome Y/ A novel. 5 stars!
  • When seventeen year old Emma's father is killed in a plane crash, she'll do anything to find out who murdered him. The French authorities say the crash was human error but Emma knows differently and so do the people who work for the Authority. When Emma is approached to join a special force of agents her grandmother is not happy, after all, she is all she has left.

Meet this wonderfully mismatched team of teen girls who must not only learn to navigate through their teens, but their first job and first friendships. This book has many touching and friendship building moments too. I would recommend giving it to a teen and their best friend for Christmas. It is a great read.
  • I read this in two days! It was fast paced, and although it had more high-action than I typically read--there was a good balance of character development, too. I really liked it! I would compare it to Ally Carter's spy books, for a slightly older audience. Keep this series going!
